Alex Bacon - System Integration Architect, ITR-MIS

"I first heard about APEX – or HTMLDB as it was then – around 5 years ago by a colleague who told me what a great product it was. A few months ago I had to adapt an existing APEX application to catalogue integration requirements for the university and found it quick to learn (an hour following an online tutorial was enough to get started) and easy to use. It is aimed at rapid application development for niche areas– it allows you to very quickly create a web based application to record and extract data into an Oracle database – the sort of thing that would take days or weeks to build by writing code can be created in minutes by following wizards. Being based on Oracle database technology you immediately get something you can share – many people can use at the same time without corrupting the data and a system that is backed up behind the scenes to ensure you don’t lose any of your data. If your data can be saved in a spreadsheet or in a few tables within Access then APEX will be great for the job. "

"APEX Applications allowed OH&S to transfer the file maker pro database that relied on typed entries from a form to an online system  using a secure web server and produce reports report, statistics and graphs. Graphs are built in but can also be customised.

It has permitted to make use of the data through interactive reports to track total hazards, open hazards and closed hazards, injuries, incidents, accidents. It will provide on line access for Budget Centres and has provided a means for Asset Management Services to prioritise the engineering fix for hazards when the Budget Centre has raised an AMS request and placed the AMS number within the hazard report.

It provides fast, secure reporting, produces reports, provides reporting access for all staff, the notification is sent to those who have the responsibility to deal with it via email. Eliminated paper work and paper files. Can attached documents and photos. It is not delayed in the mail. More review, more productivity, more hazards are finalised. Compliance with OH&S legislation. Easy to develop. Easy for everyone to use with virtually no training. Secure Access for selected persons. You can look on the web to review what the applications can do, select what you want, and then implement. ITR has all the skills to make it user friendly."

Mark Natoli - Manager UTAS OH&S, HR-OH&S

"OHS legislative requirements places a requirement for UTAS to have reporting systems in place with enables OHS hazards, incidents, accidents and near misses to be firstly reported, recorded, acted upon and then audited. All of this must occur within very strict time frames. For example, UTAS can be fined heavily for failing to report certain incidents to the regulator within 2 days.

Further to the OHS requirements, UTAS also has to meet very strict reporting deadlines as prescribed by the Workers Compensation Act amendments which came into effect 1 July 2010.

The previous paper based reporting system often resulted in many months processing lag, created a high administrative filing and scanning loads and did not provide a feedback/closed loop mechanism.

The APEX system that has been developed and is currently in use has eliminated all the previous paper based problems and it further allows us to meet the legislative requirements in a very effective and efficient manner. The number of positive responses that the OHS Unit has received from relevant staff is numerous especially in relation to the information flow including feedback now being instantaneous. Not an easy feat when one is aware that the numbers of reported incidents and hazards has grown to number in the hundreds per year.

Importantly the APEX system has been further developed to enable OHS to generate meaningful reports which are providing factual information to assist with planning and resolution of many complex hazards and safety issues. This information is shared with key stake holders and the ability to review trends and establish incident patterns is a wonderful attribute of the system that is helping to protect the UTAS community as well as protect the UTAS brand."
